Dalarna Wind Shelter is a wind shelter designed and built in the garden of a property that has a beautiful view and a strong prevailing wind. The idea was to create an ultra light structure that would protect sitting area from wind and rain. The wing shaped structure is inspired by wind shelters in Dalarna, Sweden. The wind is cut by the front edge with the majority flowing over the top of the structure. The remaining wind is filtered by a planting of tall grasses. Even on a very windy day, one can sit under the structure and not feel the wind. The supports for shelter are Y-shaped composite beams. The structure was designed to be incorporated into existing deck and fence.

Floating lounge was a design and build project in Lerum, Sweden. The floating lounge, named “Flotta” by the client, is a 3 meter x 5.4 meter floating dining room and swim lounge that is anchored in front of a private residence on the lake Stora Stamsjön in Lerum Kommune. Not all projects were created equal. This project was really fun to build. The floating lounge is powered by a small electrical boat motor. On a day when there is no wind, you can set the motor on a low setting, and the water craft moves across the water at a cinematic speed. “Flotta” is anchored to a small pier that cantilevers over a large boulder sitting in the water.

Gasolina #2 is the second edition of the the Gasolina a cafe and market place owned and operated by Chef Sandra Cordero. The interior is based on a vintage motorcycle theme with shout outs to Cordero’s northern Spainish roots. Gasolina interior design achieves its everybody is welcome good vibe from the mixture of materials, fun colors, and a melange of new and old motorcycle memorabilia.

Sportson AB is a bicycle retailer in Sweden with over 20 locations located throughout Sweden.  NHA design studio has redesigned their headquarters in 2016, adding a 80 m2 entresol and 25 m2 of additional office space.   Stacked shipping containers make up the new office and are connected to the mountain bike show room located on the entresol.

“Solar Coaster” 2020

Lerum, Sweden

“Solar Coaster” is a solar cell power station designed and built at a private residence in Lerum just outside of Göteborg. The property owner hired NHA Design Studio to design and build an alternative solution to mounting solar cells on the roof of the houses and other structures. The final design was a roller coaster structure that turns and climbs around the garden and up a hill. “Solar Coaster” is a timber construction that follows the landscape and supports over 100 solar cell panels. The structure is designed as a covered walk way around the garden with pergola like sitting areas. As the structure turns to follow the landscape the angle of inclination increases. At one end of the “ Solar Coaster” the the panels lay at 7 degrees facing South East which is ideal for summer and high sun. As the “Solar Coaster” turns and climbs the hill in the garden the angle of exposure changes to face South West and the panel inclination increases to almost 40 degrees. The solar array produces more than enough energy for entire household and charging of two fully electric automobiles.

The Hahn Residence is located in Brentwood, California on a piece of property that boarders the Santa Monica Mountains.  We were originally contacted to renovate the back yard.  We proposed a design that was heavily influenced by Japanese garden design.  During the installation of the backyard we all started to discuss the possibility of developing over an acre of land that was located on a very steep mountainous incline.  NHA Design studio developed a plan that involved the installation of a 900 meter long mountain trail loop that arrived an area that we terrace into a rather large vegetable and fruit tree garden.  The Japanese garden was a huge success, but mountain trail and vegetable garden took the cake.

The Chin residence is an absolutely beautiful home located in Corona Del Mar, California.  Our clients had just moved into their new home when we were hired to design a privacy screen around the pool, develop the hillside  below the pool, create a zen walk way and bring the green in the form of many succulent container plantings placed around the property.

PS Kaufman is an upscale men's and woman's shoe designer based in Los Angeles.  NHA Design Studio worked closely with the owner Paul Kaufman to design and create the look and feel of his new headquarters in downtown Los Angeles.  If you would like to know more about the PS Kaufman brand please check out their website at:  http://www.pskaufman.com

The Haglund residence is located deep in the forest next to a lake outside of a small town named Lerum.  In 2014, the Haglunds were obliged to start using county water and sewage, which meant that the entire yard had to be torn up and trenched.  With all of the heavy equipment on site, the Haglunds decided to chase a dream, and have an orangerie(glass house) installed on the hill above the house.  In 2015 NHA was hired to design and realize a system of decks, stairs and ramps that would lead from main house to the orangerie.  Working with amazing local carpenters, a play on angles and elevations was built using south american red wood.  The deck system is anchored into the hillside with natural stone walls and planters. 

Gasolina Cafe is a concept based restaurant/cafe in Woodland Hills.  The owner and chef Sandra Cordero hired NHA design studio to design the interior and patio of the restaurant.  The concept is motorcycles and Spanish food.  The restaurant has a very inviting atmosphere and is the perfect setting for Chef Cordero wonderful Spanish influenced cuisine. 

The Truscotts, an English family living in So. Cal had hired NHA Design studio to recreate the look of their front yard and bring the entire garden up to water conservation standards.  At a half way point in the project's installation, the Truscotts decided to move back to England. When they put there house on the market it sold very quickly at above market value.  The real estate agent accredited the quick profitable sale to the landscaping face lift that we had realized. 

NHA Design studio was presented with an interesting challenge.  The client really wanted to have a tree house for their children to enjoy, however, there were no trees on their property.  To answer the call we designed an built  the Sky Fort which is based on a a ridged steel truss frame with a cantilevered deck.  The fort was built using mainly reclaimed/recycled materials:  pipe truss and fittings from a closed down retail store, and wood from demolished homes.

Fi3 was a men's fashion exhibition in an empty airport hanger in Santa Monica, California. NHA Design Studio was commissioned to build a center piece to the exhibition. The temporary installations is named "Tree" and is essentially a large tree, however this was a fallen tree that was cut into smaller pieces for transport and then reassembled in place, using mortise and tenon joinery.  The tree stand 5 meters tall.
